berlin duo local suicide and mexican producer mijo join forces to deliver two stunning original works for the latest installment of roam recordings. edo kai tora is a uptempo main time jam with a nice vocal weaved through driving electronic stylings. ganz falsch has an electro boogie feel with cosmic synths and a fun vocal rhythmically tying it all together.

supporting the ep are two excellent remixes from renowned artists sascha funke and simple symmetry. sascha funke s elegantly dark version creeps in with a hypnotic and captivating energy while simple symmetry moves into party mode with pop sensible guitars and heavy wonkiness perfect for picking up the vibe at any party.

all four tracks are standouts on their own and together form an outstanding versatile ep and excellent addition to the roam recordings catalogue.

for those that knoe delves deeper into the archives once more to repackage a bundle of hard to find cuts on vinyl that have been staple supplies in ben s record bag over the years. the early to mid 2000s was a period of minimal techno overload, finding quality house music then was a challenge compared to today. rather than follow the herd, some european producers took influence from the original minimal pioneers and fused those approaches with house music themes in order to push a unique sound of the era. they turned minimal on its head and gave took it in a different direction. canson from switzerland released a handful of records between 2002 and 2005 that were a prime example of this aesthetic. stripped back beats with syncopated melodies - perfect cuts for those early sets or hazy morning sessions. the three tracks featured on this compilation were originally released on two solo eps for canson: itsudemo and holiday plug in, both of which have claimed squatter s rights in my record bag for almost 15 years. i don t think i ve played one early slot or house set without one of them. this record is quite a personal one for me as it s a representation of my deeper sound as a dj. now the original records are a little hard to find so im so glad to share my choice picks of cansons material on a my label.

special request joins forces with nina kraviz and anastasia kristensen, shattering the doors of perception over a four-track ep. through the looking glass drops july 20th on houndstooth. on the a side, nina kraviz provides two interpretations of curtain twitcher. alice was here remix takes the intensity of the original and boils it into a 4/4 spin of frenzied basslines and distorted acoustics, punctuated by her languid reading of the mad hatter. for the samba version, syncopated polyrhythms take charge of a fragmented melody. opening the aa side, looking glass lures you down the rabbit hole with mysterious bleeps, only to reveal a whirlwind of stormy breaks and junglist percussion. closing off the trip, anastasia kristensens remix of tiresias marches its way through a field of swollen bass and glitchy percussion.

derek s music instantly takes the listener on a midnight drive, cruising the grand river avenue through detroit. derek carr s ability to create soulful melodies that effortlessly wrap themselves around bouncy basslines and elegant beats is not only classy – it s classical. derek carr is not from the detroit though.. he s an irishman through and through, born and bred in westmeath, about 3400 miles from the state of michigan. yet he absolutely nails it! after two decades of crafting his own sound with analogue synths and samplers with the music culture of motor city as an inspiration, derek carr doesn t sound like anyone else. all the archetypical detroit sounds are there – from the robotic bleeps in binary systems to the moody strings of metro city – but derek carr uses them to create a primarily club oriented vibe, uplifting and positive.

phonica records welcomes spanish producer extraordinaire pional to it’s main label with the ‘xme / one night stand’ 12”. pional is miguel barros and the madrid based musician has been producing for over a decade. with a string of well received solo releases on hivern discs, permanent vacation, young turks and counter, remixing the likes of the xx, chairlift, the rapture, prins thomas and john talabot (who he also co-wrote the incredible ‘fin’ album ender ‘so will be now...’ with) as well as djing around the world, pional has been keeping very busy indeed. for his phonica release he has produced two versions of two very special tracks. on the a-side, ‘xme’ is a melancholic and uplifting electronic excursion with delicate flourishes of it’s synthesised melody becoming a real ear-worm throughout its six and a half minutes. the slower and more foreboding ‘quiet ceremony’ reinterpretation takes the same melody in a darker direction. on the other side, ‘one night stand’ is a bumping, stripped back and moody club track with ghostly vocals floating above metallic pads rising to a release of energy and emotion. the ‘slow drumapella’ lowers the tempo and alters the feel of the track, reducing its elements to a bare-bones drum track with the vocal, fx and pads eventually coming to the fore.

when jackmaster opened his mixmag covermount mix with arthur baker & dave clarkes collaboration from 2001 it shone a new light on this southern fried classic. it demanded a re-release and two new remixers were entasked. first up man power, whose recent releases on futureboogie and dfa are turning heads, and also rising star cody currie whose output on pusic & razor n tape make him an ideal fit. dj support: groove armada - love the man power remix! fouk - really awesome, we remember this one from back in the days! loving the cody currie remix, full support the 2 bears - great! black loops - sick release! diggin all the mixes :)

....and we d sleep out under the stars, didn t even need a blanket... victor valiant is a musical pairing of two friends who ve been meaning to go in the studio for many moons, but life has always got in the way. keith tenniswood and suade bergemann give you seven tracks of sublime funk and sonic experiments coming straight from suade s mega studio deep in the northeast of england. recorded last year over two 3 day sessions, it’s the next release on keith s asking for trouble label aft003. cut and mastered between the two producers they have executed every level of production for this double pack vinyl release. asking for trouble is keith tenniswood (radioactive man’s) recently birthed label and home to the emissions from his studio and treasured time spent with producer friends. suade bergemann is a newcastle-based producer, mastering engineer and founder of techno label adapted vinyl. he collaborates with steve legget and is a resident at free rotation.

the third release on null+void recordings comes from manchester based artist dead sound. who on his this is human ep has fully expressed his expert knack for laying down engrossing tracks on a solid bed of grooves. on this is human he works between slinky electro and quirky techno in a tough edged four track ep
null+void recordings label head kirsti has been a fan of dead sound since his first release in 2010 - no faith - on net label acroplane and following him avidely since. for anyone unfamiliar with the dead sound he’s historically found his releases land on perc trax and rebekah’s decoy two of the uk’s most uncompromising techno artists labels respectively.

it sounded all right through two walls, so what s the problem? the final words of two walls, the fast and very catchy leading track of dj marcelle s new record, sum up an aesthetic almost lost in today s musical climate, where often a pleasing attitude and overproduced music sadly rule, even in so-called alternative circles. the quote comes from the late mark e. smith (1957 - 2018), legendary frontman of the fall, and is taken from some of the conversations marcelle had with smith over the years. smith is referring to a recording process but for marcelle his words stand for something bigger.

nz import. 12inch with printed deluxe sleeve, plus lovely 2 sided full size photo inserfor its second release, strangelove resurrects two cuts from the australian cult synth pop duo, arvos, much-mythologised 1984 album luna. having spent time in europe and with heads & hearts full of the continents synth-pop movements, deborah gray and roy nicolson each returned down-under to discover a doggedly rock orientated landscape. finding solace in roys studio and inspired by their musical o.e.s, the arvo concept was formed and an album took shape. a glamorous visual/electronic opus, major label misjudgment and local bewilderment left luna to unjustly slip under the radar. rescued here, bikini channels an ipanema electronic vibe, nostalgically recalling antipodean beach culture while the synthetic undercurrents of so deep reflect on the nature of our dreams. also presented is a reimagined so deep instrumental from australias synth pop scholar-in-chief hysteric, while french m.o.t.m. shelter tailors bikini into an excursion version.

due rent is a collaborative double album by solo artists lojii & swarvy. written & recorded in the summer of 2016 in l.a. by the two philadelphian transplants, lojii says this tape is a score to being a broke nxgga in amerikkka (emphasis on the kkk) – full of dreams and hustlin to make em happen, but dealing with the everyday pressures of making ends meet. a.k.a trying to pay rent. the 22 tracks, many of which barely break the two-minute mark, make for a vast voyage through remarkable contemporary hip-hop. the grooves and beats that skip and flutter are smooth and mellow, with nods to the old-school but entirely void of nostalgia. this is a sophisticated, thoughtful, and inventive modern hip-hop record that understands anger doesnt have to be loud. daniel dylan wray, bandcamp (best 100 albums of 2017)

sextet (1982) will be released on clear orange vinyl (with download code included) in a textured sleeve replicating the original factory release. dark and brooding, yet bright and funky, sextet is a firm favourite amongst the critics and saw a certain ratio refine the experimentation of the first two albums and deliver a masterpiece that is as off-kilter and weird as it is commercial and pop.

tatu metsätähti and tatu peltonen formed their electro duo mr velcro fastener in the small town of turku, finland back in 1995. in 1999, after a couple of twelve inches, they released their first full length album ‘lucky bastards living up north’ on i220, which was well noted (not only for its hyper colourful cover art by the designers republic). the album took the duo touring in europe and overseas, and led to further releases on labels like stars-music, ali b’s air recordings, solina records, cyber dance and of course billy nasty’s electrix, as well as remixes for the likes of hardfloor, marco carola, dk8, transparent sound and aux88. returning to electrix with their third full ep for the label (and a gap of 13 years!) they have delivered their own unique and recognizable electro sound with two new cuts. ‘a monster in two worlds’ with its electro-funk sound, classic vocoded vocals and grinding groove is a perfect opener, while ‘bakteriofag’ (bacteriophage in english) like its name, creeps up like a virus, infecting the senses with its crisp and shining melody. additionally, there’s remixes of ‘a monster in two worlds’ from silicon scally (carl finlow in his electro guise) and m-twelve (the new moniker recently launched by billy nasty and surface’s nick dunton) to complete the line-up.

the brooklyn duo of bryce hackford and joakim teamed up again, this time as joyce, 2 years after their debut as jhack. a two track 12inch featuring a thumping and heady psychedelic deep house groove, in a classic prescription zone, on the a-side (bubbles). on the b-side, die siesta is a tribal ode to the balearic art of napping, a moody live percussion improvisation jumping down the bpm and floating on filtered piano chords.

cain is back with a bang this summer! the smile inducing eshu probably one of the biggest tracks he s made to date and one we ve sat on for too long now. as always, the other two tracks are equally as varied and great phoenix makes for a great opener and hoji is a current lena willikens hit.

“great many arrows” is the 6th studio album from damien dubrovnik, the danish duo of loke rahbek and christian stadsgaard. it is also the 200th release on their posh isolation label, marking 8 years for both the label and project. the label’s inception came with damien dubrovnik’s debut album, and since then the two have been inseparable. without damien dubrovnik there would most likely have been no posh isolation, and vice versa.

“aktuel musik” is the second release from kyo, a duet of hannes norrvide and frederik valentin. norrvide is best known as the protagonist of synth trio lust for youth, though his recent solo techno productions under the guise of norin have also been met with critical praise. together with danish music’s enfant terrible, valentin, whose musical history is as difficult to trace as it is to comprehend, kyo is a project nourished by the orbit of two individuals around impassioned collectives.

long time friends (since flex vienna 95) patrick and luke joined forces on blumoog music and came up with this crafty and dynamic four tracker ep. patrick pulsinger opens the project on the a with two ingenious and uplifting tracks reminiscent of his old ‘sluts’n’strings &909’ days with an acidic twist. 25 years have gone by since patrick pulsinger made history and put vienna on the map by founding techno avant-garde label cheap records and with productions like ‘dogmatic sequences’ on disko b and pioneering sequential- minimal-techno soon after with the huge lp ‘porno’ also on disko b. on the flip side luke m.r.e.u.x is consistent with his fine style. dry percussions and rubbery bass in b1 ‘cerebral fix’. a darker approach in confession b2 with a relentless 5 minutes of techno trip that will not let you catch breath.

pronsato and levi have been collaborating intermittently since 2014, with levi adding bass guitar to tracks on both pronsato’s us drag lp from last year and 2016’s ndf ep, cruel is the color, as well as contrabass on a track on pronsato’s archangel lp from 2014.
written in the afternoons and between two different studios in berlin’s prenzlauer berg, the album spans eight tracks, with yonatan levi playing on bass guitar on six of them. it also features guest appearances by downtown composer/producer peter gordon and israeli saxophonist yonatan yudkowitz on “bring me a kill.”

pontiac streator previously appeared as a guest on the first west mineral ltd release, pendant’s by-now classic make me know you sweet, while ulla straus is perhaps best known for her part on the cultishly adored bblisss compilation tape which introduced huerco s.’s pendant alias to the world at large. their first album together is a bedroom-crafted confection where drowsy meditations smudge with lounging exotica themes in a blunted style to properly heavy-lidded effect. limited edition of 300 copies on black vinyl.
